free verse ramblings from Lynchburg

remove a few peripheral influences
which are not really peripheral
but all too central, but if the central
influences which are central
because they are personal, familial,
could be pushed by a called in caterpillar
to the peripheral and a periphery
cutter could come along and shave those

peripheral influences, sources
of gluey intrigue enjoy firmly ensconced
residence within a crazy reality
able to compete with all the crude
surrealism going on at this moment
thousands of miles away; significant
of these is a certain university
dynamic and how it relates

with everything else or how everything else
about this little city that is really
more like an enlarged large town relates
to the university presence which happens
to be an extremely religious
university, fathered by
the notorious Falwell, who made
so many friends from so many walks

of life, or from fringes, depending on how
sarcastic a reader wishes to read
into that or how close it hugs
a very frank realism. Now he
and his church were always here as long
as I recall, hell, he was already on
national if not worldwide television
every Sunday back in the seventies.

Sure they had the university
but it was in infancy and few would believe
it would grow to its current mass and fewer
would believe all the tentacles
contained in the seeds and how they reach and wrap
and I’ll not say choke but others around here
would use language far less polite, but then
I’m a polite kind of guy; and I guess

what intrigues me is the fact that without
the notorious Falwell name,
almost nobody beyond these small city
limits would know or care about the word
or name of Lynchburg. But they do know
and care about the word and name of Lynchburg
and there is almost zero gray: souls
either decry the evil name they know

as Falwell or they see it as a haven
from lifestyles born in hell
and seeking to swallow their yankee cities
like Falwell’s monster baby was born
for the lust of swallowing this little
city that isn’t really a city
but an enlarged large town, the world, thanks
or no thanks to Falwell, knows as Lynchburg.

About Timmy the Scribbler

Love to write all kinds of stuff I love writing so many different kinds of stuff it is a constant struggle to narrow the focus to a manageable handful and let the others go. But a few years ago I dipped my fingers into a poetry pie and of all my uncertainties, one thing that is no uncertainty is that it is one passion that must remain, so maybe that's the one. I do dearly delight in chopping up fictional works into stanzas and syllables.
