“I get poetry!”

“I get poetry.”
“I don’t get poetry.”  

I love poetry.  I do not understand all of it.  I don’t generally try to.  The emotions provoked allow me to gauge how much a poem has an impact on me personally.  Poems like  Somewhere in the bottom of the rain by Steven Roggenbuck and Tweets from @Beach_Sloth have stuck with me.  Charles Bukowksi, D.A. Levy, Walt Whitman, e.e. cummings, all of these are poets that have struck me and shaped me as a human being.

Poetry is not a measurable substance.

I don’t love all poetry.  I love some poems.  I love some poets.  It’s like watching movies.  Poetry is not inherently spiritual or scribbled with metaphorical depth that makes it impossible to understand.  There’s no need to understand what the poet was trying to say.  It can add power or appreciation to do so, but it is important to…

Love to write all kinds of stuff I love writing so many different kinds of stuff it is a constant struggle to narrow the focus to a manageable handful and let the others go. But a few years ago I dipped my fingers into a poetry pie and of all my uncertainties, one thing that is no uncertainty is that it is one passion that must remain, so maybe that's the one. I do dearly delight in chopping up fictional works into stanzas and syllables.
