probably said this before

just using myself as my own guinea pig, I’m coming to the conclusion or seeing an answer about why the artistic stuff and artistic types can encounter problems with much of day to day living.

Getting along socially. Fitting in with a community. One really is the antithesis of the other. I’m thinking there is an assumption that what works or is acceptable in a societal sense must apply to the other. In day to day life, in society, in a community, a few rules or a universal acceptance of what is good, bad, right, wrong, only makes sense: don’t go around killing, raping, stealing, wait for the little green man to light up before crossing the crosswalk unless the streets are really absent of traffic. A few things all can agree on.

And I’m thinking there is a tendency to carry that sentiment – or have a hard time letting it go, when entering territories marked Poetics or General Fictional Wordsmithing. Or any of it. Because in these lands there is no right or wrong. Not even good and bad. They exist only as fabrications. Some have stood a test of time because they have served many very well and continue to – but they are not absolutes.

Swear to god – like I’ve not said this a million times already and will likely say it a million times more, because it’s happened at least 3 million times within the last year alone – I look over something I wrote or tried to write and if it wasn’t on a screen, if it was paper, it would be balled up and tossed, because it’s so horrible, or I don’t want to have anything to do with it, try not to think of how much time I put into such a piece of garbage. A few months or weeks or even days later, look at it again, think, hm, that’s not bad – it could be a decent novel. Why did you abandon it?

It then becomes easier to see why traditions take shape and solidify and become mistaken for hard and fast rules, just like day to day living in a community. Makes it easier to judge. But that gets old fast. And that, I’m thinking, is where much of the real difficulties lurk.

Dictionaries and thesauruses and windows to multiple facets of reality and surreality are available to all. Verbs, nouns, articles, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, periods, commas…. Just set aside all the rules and put something together, not before catching and decapitating the invisible little agents appointed to pass absolute judgements on all things, even things in the lands where there is no right or wrong or even good or bad.

That’s all you gotta do. Simple.

About Timmy the Scribbler

Love to write all kinds of stuff I love writing so many different kinds of stuff it is a constant struggle to narrow the focus to a manageable handful and let the others go. But a few years ago I dipped my fingers into a poetry pie and of all my uncertainties, one thing that is no uncertainty is that it is one passion that must remain, so maybe that's the one. I do dearly delight in chopping up fictional works into stanzas and syllables.
